The metamorphosis of Duck Avenger

Duck Avenger has been modified during the years, both from his original character of dark masked avenger and from the type of his stories. There have been three main versions of Duck Avenger of course each with some various due to different writers and story types.

The first one (to whom this site is dedicated) is Duck Avenger, the devilish self-avenger, created by Guido Martina. This first is the protagonist of several stories drawn between the 1969 to 1980, and some other rare revivals written by some artists such as Fabio Michelini: PAPERINIK E IL RITORNO A VILLA ROSA (DUCK AVENGER AND THE RETURN TO VILLA ROSE) Francesco Artibani: PAPERINIK E LA FORTUNA SOTTERRANEA (DUCK AVENGER AND THE UNDERGROUND FORTUNE) and Carlo Panaro: PAPERINIK E IL PRESTIGIO IN GIOCO (DUCK AVENGER AND THE REPUTATION AT STAKE).
This Duck Avenger, dark and intriging, who doesn't hesitate to make some barely legal actions with his light sadism, is actually considered a little bit out of the "politically correct" rules imposed (in some case in an exagerated way) from the Disney company.
Mainly apreciated from the no longer young readers whose had lived during their youth with the first Duck Avenger adventures, this original Duck Avenger fascinates because of his smarts and bravery and for his charming and (thanks to some big and famous Italian artist like Giovan Battista Carpi, Romano Scarpa, Giorgio Cavazzano and Massimo De Vita) well created sequences of night missions which were characteristic in the first Duck Avenger adventures.
In the second period that we can call post-Guido Martina, Duck Avenger has been gradually transformed into a masked "equalizer" who serves the Duckburgian inhabitants against criminality and social injustice; basically a Duckburgian Batman (In some stories he also utilizes the same sign projected in the sky!).
This second Duck Avenger, who normally makes boring night excurtions to catch thiefs, is the protagonist of several adventures written by Bruno Concina, Giorgio Pezzin and other good Italian authors like Bruno Sarda, Carlo Panaro, Giulio Chierchini etc...
Very different respect to the original one (to say the truth, even in some stories of Guido Martina, Duck Avenger starts off as a citizen hero who thinks too much to save his good image) this second version of Duck Avenger has been even much more twisted in two additional sub-versions: the Duck Avenger explorer and archaeologist like Indiana Jones and the Duck Avenger clumsy and goofy protagonist of ridiculous and grotesque stories.
Duck Avenger has been also trasformed in a futuristic superhero in the saga named PAPERINIK CONTRO TUTTI (DUCK AVENGER AGAINST ALL) In this series he fights against new modern "super" enemies.
absolutely exagerate and "ultra" heroic is another saga calls ULTRAHEROES where Duck Avenger and a group of "ultra" heroes leaded by Ega Beega, faces (with a new team outfit) the "ultra" bad leaded by Emil Eagle. This group is named BAD-7 .
In 1996 a young editor staff, writers and artists suddenly gave birth to the third Duck Avenger version more commonly known as PK (first an abreviation of Paperinik than transformed in the short form of the latin name Platyrhinchos Kineticus which means Energized Duck). This new version which is also known in the USA as Duck Avenger was in the beginning the protagonist of the comics PKNA Paperinik New Adventures followed by PK2 and in July 2002 of the new comic book PK (where in the first issue his origins, which obviously are not related to those of the classic Duck Avenger, are shown).
This new character who has nothing to do with the original and classical Duck Avenger except for the costume, is the protagonist of futuristic adventures against a dangerous alien race called the Evronians (which are not shown in the second series PK2). Even Duckburg from a typical provincial American city has been transformed into a futuristic and restless city like the Los Angeles of the Blade Runner movie, while Gyro Gearloose has been replaced by an artificial intelligence called One.
These stories, mainly read by younger readers respect to those fans of original Duck Avenger alternate pure action situations with introspective analisis while PK acts in dreadful temporal-space paradoxes where in some cases the sequence and logical coherence is not so clear.
These adventures which take a lot from those of American Marvel and Image super hero comics, are corelated with spectacular and well realized images, some full page with a impressive graphic showing powerful combact between good and evil inside chaotic and unexpected situations.
Several years after the end of the PK comic series, the adventures of the futuristic "Cyber" duck start to be published on TOPOLINO comic book. These new stories are much more similar to the ones of the first serie PKNA. The Evronians are back again while PIKAPPA who is even more exagerate mega-ultra-super-invincibile hero cyber-futuristic-spacetemponaut is equipped by One with a new special outfit made of nanoelettrical fibres with a shield system and with the extransformer shield handled by the brain's waves.
Probably because of type of stories and the readers (normally not interested in the classic Disney stories), this "Cyber Duck" would have had the same success even with a different name and a different costume and a different look which would have allowed this character to distance himself from the classic Disney clichè, which of course is still present in PK even if located in a separate universe, he is still the same Donal Duck created 70 years ago.

We can analize the typical characteristic of these three Duck Avenger versions and their positive and negative aspects.

Duck Avenger, the devilish avenger (Guido Martina, partially reproposed by Fabio Michelini, Francesco Artibani, Carlo Panaro)

Character type: Mysterious self-avenger, heir of the gentleman thief Fantomallard, enterprising and active, very skilled in the disguise. He is very keen and smart to unmask his enemies or rivals which he often punishes in a light sadistic way.

Positive aspects: He is the protagonist of long and charming stories. He is the original Duck Avenger who takes reference from the classical dark and worrying characters of literature such as Fantomas, Arsene Lupin, Diabolik etc... He looks credible as Donald's alter-ego.

Negative aspects: His first stories are now considered a little bit out of the Walt Disney "politically correct" rules. He acts sometimes at the border (and sometimes even out) of the law and in some stories he also becomes Scrooge McDuck's personal avenger-mercenary.
In almost all of his adventures he fights against the same adversary: Rockerduck, Gladstone, the Beagle Boys and Scrooge.

Duck Avenger, the hero law enforcer (Concina, Pezzin, Chierchini, Sarda ecc..)

Character type: Idealist with no spot on his reputation, champion of the oppressed people, goodness avenger who serves the community, he is sensible to the social problem. He has good will but sometimes he is goofy and clumsy.

Positive aspects: He can be easily placed in several stories types refering of social justice helping awareness in the younger generations.

Negative aspects: Most of his stories are banal and boring. He is too often grotesque and ridiculous, in the archaeological version he looks silly and out of place while, in exotic countries, he explores jungles and ancient temples wearing his black costume during the day! In the superheroic variant he doesn't look credible as Donald's alter ego.

PK, Futuristic sci-fi super hero (various authors)

Character type: Super hero human being and galaxy defender, hyperactive and skillful user of the most technological advanced devices.

Positive aspects: His stories are well made with a charming computer-graphic (even if the second and third series PK2 and PK are considered to be of less quality than the first one PKNA). This is an innovative comic respect to the classical Disney production and it is read by a widespread public audience. The character is indicated for the realisation of gadgets, toys and videogames.

Negative aspects: He is Donald who acts who knows why or when in a completely different universe from the Disney classical adventure one. Even if he doesn't have storical continuity with the classical Paperinik he uses the same costume and in the beginning the same name.
His image is nevertheless to much related to the original Donald who obviously reminds of the classical Disney universe. Having a dedicated comic serie PK, once the fashion of the cyber-futur-superhero is gone, the character could be bypassed ( as already happend to the comic Mickey Mouse MM and the first two series of PK: PK New Adventures and PK2), by more innovative and in fashion series like the recent Italian Disney comic Witch.

COMMENT
Leaving PK, whose origins and adventures are not related to the first classical Duck Avenger, to some extend the two characters can be liked both the same without any inconsistency. It would be like comparing a Formula 1 and a commercial Ferrari, even if both are from the same company and have the same color they belong to different not comparable realities. As for what concerns the type of adventures dedicated to the classical Duck Avenger, it would be improbable that this first Guido Martina character (in my opinion the most appropriate image) would be shown again with all his intriging and good-natured trickery.
It may be very difficult as well that the post-Martina's Duck Avenger could loose his image of the urban-hero and community helping protagonist of boring and flat stories too far away from the spirit of the original Duck Avenger.
In my opinion a credible character should be protagonist of intriging and as much as possible dark stories. Duck Avenger should be neither a cynic avenger, nor in service for the community, not even a real outlaw but believed to be by the police, adventureous but not like Indiana Jones, ironic but not goofy or ridiculous, smart but not "super" or "ultra", fighting against dangerous villains but not always the same.
Some examples of Duck Avenger stories that are credible and in compliance with the Disney "politically correct" rules are shown on the page unpublished stories.
